Mothers’ Union has links with the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) in the Church of the Philippines. The ECW was formed in the Philippines over 100 years ago and brings Christian women together in a fellowship of faith, witness and service in the life and work of the Church.
Violence against women including incest, rape, and sexual harassment is a major concern for the Church in the Philippines, especially because of a culture of silence which hinders many women from speaking out. According to one source, as many as one in five women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence, whilst one in ten women in the Philippines have experienced sexual violence. Overseas contract workers - mostly women – are particularly vulnerable to being abused sexually and mentally by employers and there is concern for family life with many mothers being away from their children during their formative years.
