The Fundraising, Communications and Retail Team


The Team is responsible for fundraising for the charitable work of Mothers’ Union and for communicating our work internally and externally in various formats and media platforms, resourcing dioceses and building membership. It has 3 areas of responsibility:


  • Fundraising – community, individual giving and trusts and statutory funding and
  • Communications – print and social media, Events, PR and Publications, including production of our magazine “Connected”.
  • Retail – Manage the Mothers’ Union online retail offering.









Main Responsibilities


Membership Care and Income Processing


  • Be the first point of contact for all donor and membership enquiries by phone, letter or email and responding to these in a timely manner.
  • Manage and develop the Central membership programme, including renewal, engagement and events.
  • To record and acknowledge all fundraising income received from various sources (cheques, cash, online giving).
  • To manage content and reporting of the online giving platforms.
  • To brief internal stakeholders on upcoming activity to ensure consistency of call handling and messaging.


Data and Database use


  • To work alongside the Database Manager to maintain the data architecture and quality of the database at all times.
  • Support and train (online and in person) regional volunteer data co-ordinators.
  • To work with the Individual Giving and Partnership manager to track the supporter and member journeys, providing analysis and feedback from the database.
  • To undertake data research as required and compile and maintain appropriate lists and databases of information/contacts.
  • Support the Database Manage with our Fundraising Regulatory memberships and processes; including data protection for Fundraising.




  • To manage the bookings diary for Mothers’ Union’s displays and banners.
  • To manage membership and anniversary card requests.
  • Provide admin support to the Head of Fundraising, Communications and Retail around team and membership meetings.
  • Be proactive in keeping up to date with developments affecting the role.
  • To actively be involved in any projects undertaken by the team and contribute as required or directed by the Head of Fundraising, Communications and Retail.
  • To work closely with colleagues as requested on various fundraising campaigns.
  • To contribute to team meetings and organisational priorities.
  • To carry out other reasonable duties as required.


Personal Characteristics and skills required


  • Experience of working in a customer/supporter or membership role dealing with customers or donors via letter, email and over the phone.
  • Experience of database administration and their use in marketing effectively to donors and members.
  • Experience of working in an office managing a varied range of administrative tasks, including minute taking at meetings.
  • High level of computer literacy- proficient in MS Office in particular Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills – an ability to effectively manage workload and meet set deadlines.
  • Flexible - able to work largely self-directed and use your own initiative.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to work accurately and consistently in keeping with high professional standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to engage with a wide range of people both through written and verbal communication.
  • Team player- ability to work with others and contribute to the success of the Team.


Education or Qualifications required


Educated to ‘A’ level/higher or relevant administrative or IT qualifications or possess demonstrable significant administrative skills.




  • The responsibilities in this post may be adapted or changed in line with the needs of Mothers’ Union. Other duties may be added or requested as a result.
  • The responsibilities in this post will require the post holder to work within a team and cross functionally with other teams to achieve the objectives.
  • Willingness to work very occasionally at the weekend/overnight stays away from home.


Work Location


This role is primarily based at our head office in Central London. However, due to the current restrictions on movement, home working option is temporarily made available. Mothers’ Union is looking at a hybrid working solution where staff will be required to work a minimum two days from office. However, there will be occasions where staff will need to work from office for more than the 2 day minimum due to operational requirements.
