5,000th gift given to new mum

Mothers' Union Australia Hervey Bay branch has given away its 5000th gift to a new mother in Hervey Bay Hospital. New mum Jude, with her baby daugher Rose were the lucky recipients.

Members of MU Australia Hervey Bay branch have been giving new mums on the Fraser Coast gifts to help them become more adjusted to parenthood for 15 years. Each mum receives a gift basket full of hand-made items that are useful to new families.

Branch Tresurer Rosslyn Fallon says a typical basket contains hand-made bits, washers, beanies, booties, mittens and small stuffed toys.

The branch has been visiting the maternity unit every Thursday for 15 years to give this support. "Although we come from the Anglican Church, we don't discriminate so if you have a baby on a Thursday in the Hervey Bay hospital, you get a gift."

The Hervey Bay branch will celebrate its 75th birthday in May this year.
