Guyana

Guyana is situated on the northern coast of South America, bordered by Venezuela to the west, Suriname to the east, and Brazil to the south. It is the only country in South America where English is the official language. About one-third of the Guyanese population is estimated to live below the poverty line with those living in the Amerindian hinterland being disproportionately affected.

Mothers' Union began in Guyana in 1926 and continues to grow each year. The 2,300 members of Mothers' Union in Guyana are involved in numerous community outreach initiatives and projects throughout the country - from the urban centre of the capital Georgetown to the most isolated of communities in the rainforest interior. These include:

  • Child Day Care Centres
  • Skills training
  • Nutrition awareness programme
  • Breakfast and Hot Meals Programme
  • Hospital visitation
  • Prison ministry
  • Church and Community Mobilisation (Awaken)
  • Parenting Programme
  • Campaigning against gender-based violence, including 16 days of activism
  • Annai Community Shop
