Two Mothers’ Union members are raising funds for the Carlisle Bishop’s Harvest Appeal by cycling to every MU branch in Cumbria

The Harvest Appeal appeal, according to the website of the Diocese of Carlisle, will support the ongoing work in Democratic Republic of Congo, Isreal and occupied Palestinian territories. DRC is one of the poorest countries in the world. Climate change has affected the country badly, even though they barely contributed to it. Women and girls often suffer disproportionately as a result of illiteracy and cultural stigmas.

Haircut 125 for Mothers' Union Cantebury Diocese

Mothers' Union Cantebury Diocesan President Marianna Poliszczuk cut her waist length hair on Saturday 4th September in support of Haircut 125 for Canterbury Diocesan Mothers' Union. Her hair will be used in wigs for those who have lost hair from a range of medical conditions.

Additionally after the cut, she will be Turning Blue, in recognition of the 125 years' of the Mothers' Union in Kent working with families.

The money raised will aid local Mothers' Union to fulfil the primary objective to help those whose family life has met with adversity.

Putting the Fun back into Fundraising

South East Derbyshire deanery have been meeting on zoom through out the pandemic to encourage and support one another as well as keeping up to date with Mothers' Union News both in the diocese and worldwide. We hadn't been able to do any fundraising so inspired by 'On the Move' and 'Summer of Hope' appeals we decided to look into the posibility of a sponsored walk in a local country park.

Discover the history of Mothering Sunday as we continue its legacy today

In the Middle Ages

Back in the 16th century, on Mothering Sunday, people used to return to the church where they were baptised, or the local parish church. This was known as their ‘mother church’. The essence of this practice was that people remained in touch with the community they had grown up in. The actual service took place on the fourth Sunday of Lent and symbolised the coming together of families.

Worldwide President of Mothers’ Union, Lynne Tembey Statement on Lake Victoria Ferry Tragedy

Following the disaster, President John Magufuli, of Tanzania, immediately declared four days of mourning. I was terribly moved by this and felt  privileged and deeply humbled to be with fellow members as we prayed together for those who were affected: those who lost their lives, those who lost loved ones, those who were injured, those who might find it difficult to come to terms with what has happened and those who will minister to all.

Throughout the Mothers’ Union Provincial Conference, time was set aside for prayer.
