Burundi

Burundi, located in Africa’s Great Lakes region, is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranked 184 out of 188 on the Human Development Index. The country has a history marked by conflict and continues to face significant political and economic challenges.

Mothers’ Union has been active in Burundi for over 70 years and has over 18,000 members. Central to their work is the Mothers’ Union Listening, Observing and Acting (MULOA) process, which helps leaders understand the needs of those they serve and improve their effectiveness. Peace and reconciliation are key priorities, especially addressing domestic violence, which predominantly affects women and children. MU Burundi equips its leaders with active listening and communication skills and mobilises churches and communities to act against violence.

Other initiatives include literacy and financial education, savings groups, parenting programmes and advocacy against gender-based violence.
