Mothers’ Union Takes the “Flight of Angels” on Valentine’s Day
Mothers' Union, February 18, 2026
This Valentine’s Day, members of Mothers’ Union swapped flowers and chocolates for helmets and harnesses, taking on a sponsored zipline challenge to raise funds for the Province of Wales Mothers’ Union and its membership of the Community of the Cross of Nails.
Leading the way was Provincial President Sue Rivers, joined by newly enrolled member — and daughter-in-law — Non Rivers, alongside her 11-year-old granddaughter, Meg. With the encouragement of Provincial Zonal Trustee Lowrie Washington-Jones, three generations quite literally took the “flight of angels” at Tower Colliery in Aberdare.
Brave members Fran and Alison from the Swansea and Brecon Dioceses also spread their wings, soaring down the line in support of Mothers’ Union’s vital work and their Diocesan Cross of Nails.
“The idea was born from a desire to step outside our comfort zones,” comments Sue. “Many members have marked their 80th birthdays by completing the zipline in aid of Mothers’ Union. I had not been able to do it before, but now, with a new hip, I felt determined to prove that anything is possible with a ‘bionic’ hip!”
After six weeks of daily rain, Valentine’s Day dawned bright and beautiful, sunny, crisp, and windless. In the distance, Pen y Fan stood snow-capped against the blue sky. In that breathtaking moment, the participating members felt deeply aware of God’s presence, watching over them and holding them safe. There were nerves beforehand, as to be expected, but the staff were wonderful at reassuring and offering calm encouragement every step of the way.
Once everyone was strapped in, it became clear that the only way was down! As they launched, the thrill was immediate and unforgettable.
Many members who have completed a zipline shared they wanted to do it again straight away, and Sue now understands why. Whilst she would happily repeat the experience, Lowrie, despite enjoying the challenge, said once was enough!
Through generous sponsorship, reaching out to friends, family, contacts, and acquaintances during Christmas social gatherings, the challenge has already raised over £1,500. Support came not only from Mothers’ Union members, but from the wider community who were inspired by the purpose behind the event.
The funds will contribute towards the 150th anniversary legacy project, enabling each Diocesan Mothers’ Union in the Province of Wales to become a member of the Community of the Cross of Nails, sharing in its commitment to peace, justice, and reconciliation.
With courage and compassion, Mothers’ Union continues to create lasting change, supporting families, strengthening communities, and lighting the way with hope, strength, and safety across the world.
On this Valentine’s Day, love was not just spoken; it was lived, boldly and joyfully, high above the Welsh valleys.
