Church of Ceylon Mothers’ Union celebrates 150th anniversary

The Church of Ceylon Mothers’ Union in Sri Lanka has been marking our 150th anniversary with fundraising events, prayer gatherings and opportunities for fellowship, bringing together members from across Colombo in support of Mothers’ Union’s work. 

The first event, a New Year Sale held in March in Nugegoda, with Mothers’ Union branches from across Colombo hosting 16 stalls selling clothing, food and a range of other items. The sale raised valuable funds for local projects within a lively and fun atmosphere.   

In May, members also enjoyed a sing along and musical evening at a church community centre . MU branches supported the event by purchasing tickets and sponsoring advertisements for the souvenir programme. The evening brought members together to sing, enjoy fellowship, and listen to much-loved Sinhala songs and music. 

Alongside the fundraising events, on a Thursday in May, prayers were held in three churches and led in English, Sinhala, and Tamil, to represent the bringing together of members from different communities and backgrounds. Guest speakers were invited to share reflections and encouragement during the gatherings. 

Looking ahead at the rest of the year, members from across the island will gather at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Colombo, on 29 August for a special Eucharist Service celebrating the 150th anniversary of MU worldwide. The Rt Revd Dushantha Rodrigo, Bishop of Colombo, will be the celebrant preacher, followed by a talent show presented by branches from around the country. 

As celebrations continue, we give thanks for God’s blessings and for the friendship, faith and service that continue to connect Mothers’ Union communities across Sri Lanka and around the world.
