About us

Lighting the way for generations to come since 1876

Who we are

Mothers’ Union is a women-led, international Christian movement dedicated to ending poverty, violence and social injustice in communities in the UK and around the world.

Active for 150 years, with over 4 million members in approximately 84 countries, we work with people of all faiths and none, transforming lives, strengthening families and communities, and advocating for meaningful change.

Rooted in kindness, faith and compassionate action, we strive to create a better future where everyone has the opportunity and resources to thrive.

Mothers’ Union Approach

We are proud to operate with a grassroots approach; our members put their faith into action within their communities every day. Led by the communities’ needs, we listen and respond to create safe spaces, breaking down barriers between and within people.

Through participatory exercises such as Bible studies, our members engage communities in addressing sensitive issues and challenging harmful societal norms – empowering even the world’s most underserved communities to transform their lives. By mobilising members to partner with churches, church leaders and other stakeholders, including governments and other NGOs, mutually agreed outcomes are achieved.

Mothers’ Union equips members and their communities to recognise and utilise the skills, resources and talents around them. Through this process, people take ownership of their future, lifting them from dependency. We also work extensively through lobbying and engagement with key decision-makers, especially governments, to address underlying issues and bring about systemic change.

Our vision and mission

At the core of all we do is our belief that faith and compassion can transform lives.
