The Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands, located in Oceania to the east of Papua New Guinea, comprises six major islands and over 900 smaller ones. With a mountainous and heavily forested terrain, most of the population lives along the coast, and only around 20% reside in urban areas, two-thirds of whom live in the capital, Honiara.
An overwhelming 96% of the population identifies as Christian, and 70% are under the age of 30. This youthful and faith-driven population has helped Mothers’ Union flourish since its beginnings in the 1930s. Today, Mothers’ Union in the Solomon Islands is a vibrant, community-focused organisation with over 16,000 members actively engaged in a wide range of initiatives including adult literacy circles, vocational training and skills development and confident and leadership in education.
