South Sudan

South Sudan, the world’s youngest country since its 2011 independence, has been heavily impacted by ongoing civil conflict, leading to mass displacement and severe economic hardship. Hundreds of thousands are either internally displaced within South Sudan or have fled to seek shelter in neighbouring countries.

The effect of the war has been economically devastating, and South Sudan is now one of the poorest countries in the world, with inflation exceeding 1000% and widespread poverty, causing families to face immense challenges.

Despite this, Mothers’ Union in South Sudan, with 53,000 members, has been at the forefront of efforts to provide both immediate emergency relief, and long-term developmental programmes to bring back hope to families and communities. Members play a vital role through emergency relief, peacebuilding, trauma support, vocational and literacy training, orphan care, sustainable farming, legal advocacy for women’s rights, and promoting gender equality and women’s leadership.
