Following in the footsteps of our founder, Mary Sumner in 1876 – as Mothers’ Union members – today we are part of a Christian mission organisation whose vision is of a world where God's love is shown through loving, respectful, and flourishing relationships. By supporting marriage and family life, especially through times of adversity, Mothers’ Union members engage with the most urgent needs challenging relationships and communities.

Here in the Diocese of Gloucester, through prayer, policy and practical action, our members engage at grassroots level to demonstrate our Christian faith – working towards transformation of our communities – both locally and globally to encourage the nurture of the family in its many forms.

The Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd Rachel Treweek, a Mothers Union member, encourages Mothers’ Union members to engage with the marginalised within our communities. Our engagement with the community includes:

Practical Action:

  • AFIA: Away From It All. Short holidays for families in need
  • We support the chaplaincy work at our local women’s prison
  • We support Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers with donations of clothing
  • We knit baby blankets for our local maternity units
  • We run parenting courses

Prayer:

  • Offering Rainbow Prayer Days – taking time to reflect on the impact of domestic violence and other gender–based issues within society
  • Ideas to run your own prayer day are available to download via the resources page on our website
  • Details of diocesan celebrations and the gatherings for midday prayers at Gloucester Cathedral available here
  • A warm welcome awaits anyone wishing to join with us to pray for families and communities around the world

Policy:

  • Promoting the vision and mission of Mothers’ Union
