Mothers' Union Diocese of Lichfield

The Diocese of Lichfield is diverse in its many communities across 1,700 square miles, from the Welsh border to the West Midlands conurbation, to Tamworth on the Leicester and Birmingham borders and to the Staffordshire Moorlands at the Derbyshire border, including the urban areas of Stoke-on-Trent and parts of the Black Country. Mothers’ Union therefore has to adapt locally to the situations we face, some of our most deprived parishes are amongst the worst in the country, but we also have some of the least deprived in the country as well.

Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Lichfield is organised into 28 Deaneries, with over 1,500 members within the four archdeaconries of Lichfield, Salop, Stoke and Walsall.
Within each deanery, branches are linked to one or more church parishes and there are two team branches. Branch members meet regularly, and events are also held at deanery and diocesan level. Four types of membership are available – branch, deanery, diocesan and central – giving a wide range of membership possibilities, membership can be tailored to your lifestyle. You can also support the work of Mothers’ Union without becoming a member.

Our work:

• Supporting AFIA holidays
• Knitting for premature babies and vulnerable people
• Dementia cushions for those in nursing/care homes
• We have run a ‘Summerfest’ event for families at Dovedale House in the past and may run more in the future
• Members help in parishes with baptism preparation and making welcome bags for new babies
• We run at least two annual quiet days for both members and non-members
• We hold archdeaconry festivals in each archdeaconry every three years
• Many members support their local women’s refuges and women’s aid charities
• We send cards to prisoners and have previously sent over 7,000 cards to nine prisons.
