Mothers' Union Diocese of Sheffield

Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Sheffield covers south Yorkshire and the southern parts of East Riding of Yorkshire

We are a diverse community of Mothers' Union members, following in Mary Sumner’s footsteps, supporting families across the diocese, at home and abroad. We are committed to campaigning against social injustices that affect family life and advocate gender equality.

We have over 900 members in 44 branches. Each group decides on their own programme and meets regularly for worship, fun and fellowship as well as supporting the work in their parish. We meet together as a diocese at a monthly coffee morning in Sheffield Cathedral with a homemade produce stall. We also organise family fun days, quiet days, and other events across the diocese both to promote the work of Mothers’ Union as outreach and to support our members. We produce a free printed magazine called Newsline three times a year for all members to keep them up to date with past and future events across the diocese and the work of Mothers’ Union worldwide. We have a Face book page SheffieldMU and a website, both of which are updated regularly.

Our work:

  • We run a number of toddler groups across the diocese
  • Prison play area for visiting children
  • Baptism and bereavement visiting
  • Support four women’s refuges across the diocese
  • Organise Away From It All holidays and away days
  • Are part of the Clewer initiative working alongside Sheffield Police to providie bags containing essential items for those victims of modern day slavery.
  • Provide Red Boxes to schools across the diocese for those young people unable to access sanitary wear.
  • Prayer chain across the diocese and Wave of Prayer
  • Worldwide links with Diocese of Central Zimbabwe, Lango in Uganda, Kebbi in Nigeria, Tamale in Ghana and Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands
  • Fundraise for Mothers' Union projects at home and abroad such as the literacy projects and parenting programmes as well as supporting Mothers' Union Overseas Fund and relief work.
