We are a diverse community of Mothers' Union members, following in Mary Sumner’s footsteps, supporting families across the diocese, at home and abroad. We are committed to campaigning against social injustices that affect family life and advocate gender equality.

We have around 700 members in 31 branches, as well as a Diocesan Group and an IMPC group of members whose branch has closed but they still wish to be members. Each group decides on their own programme and meets regularly for worship, fun and fellowship as well as supporting the work in their parish. We meet together as a diocese at a monthly coffee morning in Sheffield Cathedral with a homemade produce stall. We also organise family fun days, quiet days, and other events across the diocese both to promote the work of Mothers’ Union as outreach and to support our members. We produce a free printed magazine called Newsline twice a year for all members to keep them up to date with past and future events across the diocese and the work of Mothers’ Union worldwide. We have a Face book page, SheffieldMU and a website www.sheffieldmu.co.uk, both of which are updated regularly.

Our work:

  • Organise Away From It All holidays and away days
  • We run a number of toddler groups across the diocese
  • Baptism and bereavement visiting
  • Support five women’s refuges across the diocese
  • Are part of the Clewer initiative working alongside Sheffield Police to providie bags containing essential items for those victims of modern day slavery.
  • Prison play area for visiting children
  • Prayer chain across the diocese and Wave of Prayer
  • Worldwide links with Diocese of Central Zimbabwe, Lango in Uganda, Kebbi in Nigeria, Tamale in Ghana, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands and Bondo, Kenya
  • Fundraise for Mothers' Union projects at home and abroad such as the literacy projects and parenting programmes as well as supporting Mothers' Union Overseas Fund and relief work.

There are many ways to get involved in Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Sheffield. On a local level take a look at our website and find a branch near you, there are both evening and daytime meetings. We also have 2 groups for those unable to get to meetings- a Diocesan Members group and a Sheffield IMPC group. Both of these groups get regular updates to keep in touch with Sheffield MU. On a national and international level you can be involved with projects that interest you just contact us.
