Archbishop of York joins Mothers’ Union’s 150th anniversary celebration at York Minster

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, joined members of Mothers’ Union from across the Diocese of York on Saturday 8 August for a special celebration marking the organisation’s 150th anniversary, held on the eve of Mary Sumner Day.

Beginning with a community picnic in Dean’s Park at 3pm and followed by Evensong at York Minster at 5.30pm, where the Archbishop preached, the event celebrated 150 years of Mothers’ Union’s Christian mission to support families and strengthen communities around the world.

Archbishop Stephen’s sermon reflected on Mary Sumner’s remarkable legacy, the call to Christian discipleship, and the promise that God is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine. You can read the sermon in full here.

The date was especially significant as it fell on the eve of Mary Sumner Day (9 August), when the Church commemorates Mothers’ Union founder Mary Sumner. Founded in 1876 in Hampshire, Mothers’ Union has grown into a worldwide Christian movement with members in more than 80 countries, united in faith, prayer and action to support family life and build stronger communities.

Archbishop Stephen said:
‘For 150 years, the Mothers’ Union has remained faithful to Christ while continually responding to the changing needs of the world. As we celebrate this remarkable anniversary, we give thanks for all that God has done through countless small acts of faith and service, and we look ahead with confidence, asking where God is leading us next.’

The celebration was open to everyone. Attendees were invited to bring their own picnic and join members, supporters and the wider community in giving thanks for the organisation’s rich heritage and looking ahead to its continuing mission.
