Faith in Action: Stephanie’s Story – Mothers’ Union’s commitment to ending gender-based violence

Each year, Mothers’ Union takes part in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign calling for an end to all forms of violence faced by women and girls. For many of our members, this campaign is a moment of solidarity; for others, it is deeply personal.

For Stephanie, it is both personal and powerful. In her late 20’s, Stephanie is one of the youngest MU members in the Diocese of Llandaff. A survivor of domestic violence, Stephanie has transformed her lived experience into a lifelong mission of empowerment, advocacy and hope. Her journey speaks to what Mothers’ Union is all about – putting faith into action and supporting women and families even when life is at its hardest.

“My mission has always been rooted in empowerment,” Stephanie writes – and her work reflects that mission at every level. As an advocate, educator, and Founder of The Empowerment Curriculum, she works to create environments where women and girls are supported. Through building confidence, challenging stereotypes and promoting healthy relationships, Stephanie encourages young people to speak out, especially when taking a stand against domestic violence.

Her commitment comes from lived experience of surviving domestic abuse. Stephanie knows the weight of silence and the life-changing power of breaking it. She has seen how education, community, and compassion can interrupt cycles of abuse and foster healing.

Becoming a member of Mothers’ Union was a natural extension of Stephanie’s values: faith expressed through action, communities strengthened through courage, and hope nurtured through awareness and education.

At Mothers’ Union, this work is part of who we are. Our commitment to ending gender-based violence is seen across our global movement, not just through campaigning during the 16 Days of Activism, but also through our RISE UP campaign. We advocate for policies that protect women and children, with grassroots projects supporting survivors worldwide, sustained with prayer, fellowship and practical support.

Stephanie’s voice amplifies the MU message heard across 84 countries: every woman and girl deserves to live free from fear. For her, it is the impact of her work that gives her purpose. She uses her platform to raise awareness, advocate for prevention, and amplify the stories of the people affected by abuse. She has reclaimed her narrative with strength, showing that survivorship is not just about escaping harm, but about rebuilding identity and community.

Reflecting on her own journey, Stephanie says: “Being in a dark place and coming out the other side taught me the true meaning of survival; it is not just existing. It is choosing to live, choosing to heal, and being determined to use my voice for change.”

Stephanie’s story embodies what Mothers’ Union stands for during the 16 Days of Activism, and all year round. Change can begin with voice and grows when we stand together as a movement of faith, justice and compassion.

Across the world, MU members are doing their part by raising awareness, supporting survivors, and working tirelessly to end gender-based violence in their communities. With members like Stephanie, the future of MU’s mission is full of courage, resilience, and hope.

If Stephanie’s story inspires you, we invite you to stand alongside Mothers’ Union in the global fight against gender-based violence. By becoming a member, you join a worldwide movement committed to prayer, practical support, campaigning, and community action.
