Friendship Conference in Ethiopia brings communities together in unity and peace

In early April, a Friendship Conference was held at the Good Shepherd Cathedral in Gambella, Ethiopia, hosted by Mothers’ Union in partnership with the Diocese of Gambella. The conference brought together 150 participants from communities and churches in the town, including church members, government representatives and community leaders. 

The Friendship Conference forms part of the wider MU Eagles Project, which champions the use of existing local resources to empower change in individuals, the church, and the wider community. The project is combined with biblically based training materials, alongside savings groups and business skills training programmes. This holistic approach supports spiritual and practical transformation, equipping communities to build more stable and sustainable futures. 

The conference reflected the diversity of the Gambella region, with participants representing the Nuer, Anyuak, Majang, Komo and Opo communities. The primary objectives of the conference were to promote peace, reconciliation, unity and spiritual fellowship amongst communities in the aftermath of recent conflicts amongst the tribes in the region.  

Throughout the day, the conference facilitated open dialogue and reconciliation, and enhanced collaboration and mutual trust between church leaders and government authorities. The work of Mothers’ Union in encouraging peace and supporting community development was also highlighted, with moments of prayer, preaching and worship providing opportunities for spiritual reflection, emphasising the positive role of faith in supporting peacebuilding efforts.  

Reflecting on the event, MU Literacy and Eagles Project Assistant Michael Keak shared: ‘The Friendship Conference helped to disseminate the message of peace, unity, and community support to the broader community in the region.’
