Mothers’ Union appoints new Bishop Ambassador

The Bishop of Basingstoke has been appointed as Mothers’ Union Bishop Ambassador.

The Rt Revd Kelly Betteridge has taken up the position, serving the worldwide movement of over 4 million members. She succeeds The Rt Revd Emma Ineson, who completed her term as Central Chaplain for Mothers’ Union in November.

In her new role, Bishop Kelly will help guide the spiritual lives of Mothers’ Union members and staff, while ensuring the organisation continues to work effectively alongside clergy and the wider church.

Bishop Kelly said:

“My interest in and support of the Mothers’ Union was first ignited in the 1990s during two visits to Africa, where I experienced the vibrancy and impact of the MU in Tanzania and Ghana. I welcome the global connectivity that MU offers and sustains.

I became a local MU member while in the Diocese of Truro and am now a member in Winchester, the birthplace of the Movement. I have chosen to be a member largely because I greatly value the radical and transformative work of the MU, its ethos as a grassroots movement, and its global reach in supporting communities where the need is greatest.”

Bev Jullien, Chief Executive of Mothers’ Union, said:

“We are thrilled and honoured that Bishop Kelly has accepted this important role, and we look forward to working with her to strengthen relationships between Mothers’ Union, the Church of England, and the wider church.”

Please join us in welcoming Bishop Kelly. We assure her of our prayers, both for her ministry in the Diocese of Winchester, birthplace of our founder, Mary Sumner, and as she takes on this role within our movement.
