Mothers’ Union Reflects on the Inauguration of Pope Leo XIV

“It was a profound honour to be present at such a deeply spiritual and historic moment for the global Church. The inauguration of Pope Leo XIV was a powerful reminder of the shared hope and mission that unite us across traditions.

I was especially moved by the Pope’s continued emphasis on unity, peace and mission—values that lie at the heart of Mothers’ Union’s work in communities worldwide.

He appealed for a united Church, to be “a sign of unity and communion, which becomes a leaven for a reconciled world”. He also encouraged the faithful to “Look to Christ! Come closer to him…” and to “Listen to his offer of love and become his one family: in the one Christ, we are one.”

It was a message of hope and encouragement, received well by the thousands gathered for the inauguration Mass, which took place in St Peter’s Basilica and St Peter’s Square. It was incredibly moving to be one of the people there listening to his words.

Being part of the Anglican delegation, alongside leaders committed to reconciliation and partnership, reaffirmed my belief that when we stand together in faith and purpose, we can help bring healing and hope to a fractured world.”

Mothers’ Union stands in solidarity with the wider Christian family, working on reconciliation, supporting families, and upholding justice for all people – guided by faith, compassion, and community.
