Mothers’ Union supports PEGI’s new age rating updates for video games
Mothers' Union, March 30, 2026
From June 2026, PEGI (Pan-European Game Information) is introducing a significant update to its age rating system, expanding its criteria to include interactive risk categories. In addition to traditional content warnings, PEGI will now look more closely at features such as in-game purchases, paid random items, communication tools, and mechanics that encourage extended play. The change reflects the realities of modern gaming and aims to give parents and guardians clearer guidance in an increasingly complex digital world.
Since 2003, Mothers’ Union has contributed to conversations around video games through its involvement with PEGI, the European system that helps families make informed decisions about age-appropriateness for video games and digital apps. Mothers’ Union contributes to PEGI through its representation on the Experts Group, bringing a unique perspective that is shaped by family life and values.
In November 2025, Director of Membership Steph Nunn represented Mothers’ Union at the Experts Group meeting in Malaga, continuing the commitment to ensure the voices of families are heard in these discussions. Commenting on the updates, Steph said:
“Mothers’ Union is proud to work with PEGI, helping to ensure that parents have the tools they need to keep their children safe. The broadened risk ratings reflect a more accurate overall playing experience. Any parent concerned about age-appropriateness and online safety can trust PEGI’s informed and robust criteria.”
As gaming continues to evolve, clear guidance for families is more important than ever. PEGI’s updated framework is a positive step towards greater transparency and online safety, helping families feel confident in how they engage with the digital world.
