Bye Buy Childhood postcards in Ireland and Wales

Inspired to take action by the Bye Buy Childhood campaign, Mothers’ Union members in Ireland produced a ready-to-send postcard for complaints about unsuitable television content shown outside the watershed. All-Ireland Mothers’ Union produced two versions of the postcard - one pre-addressed to Ofcom and one to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland - for people to fill in the details of their complaint. The postcard was launched at the All-Ireland Leadership conference and a press release helped gain media coverage.

Taking inspiration from Ireland, Mothers’ Union members in Wales decided to produce their own version of the postcard to Ofcom in English and Welsh. The launch of the postcard took place in the Senedd, sponsored by Janice Gregory AM, and was attended by a number of Welsh Assembly members and the Bishop of Wales. Sending out a press release ensured that the postcard launch received coverage in print, radio and television.

Action on Gender Equality in Uganda

Mothers’ Union Uganda has taken action on gender equality. Members worked with other women’s networks to challenge injustices faced by women. For example by participating in 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence from 25th November to 10th December and taking part in television and radio talk shows. Mothers’ Union Uganda is now seen as an organisation that is committed to advocacy.
