St Brigid – one of the few female Irish saints – was known for her generosity to the poor and needy. She founded two monastic institutions – one for men and one for women – in Kildare. She is often depicted holding a reed cross which is now known as a ‘St Brigid’s Cross’. Legend has it that she used to weave these crosses and tie them with ribbons to give to those she met on the road. Weaving a St Brigid’s Cross can be a creative way of focussing prayer.
These cute little creatures are requested by neonatal units to give to premature babies. The tentacles of the octopus remind tiny babies of the umbilical cord, which they would have been holding on to in the womb and this provides comfort and makes them feel safe.
