Welcoming the New Archbishop of Canterbury

A Message from our Worldwide President and CEO on the Appointment of the New Archbishop of Canterbury

03 Oct 2025

It is with great joy and profound thanksgiving that we welcome the new Archbishop of Canterbury, The Rt Revd Dame Sarah Mullally.

We rejoice not only in her appointment to this historic office, but also in the significance of her becoming the first woman to serve as Archbishop of Canterbury - and, by extension, as Patron of Mothers’ Union. We are looking forward to continuing to work with her as she takes up this new role.

For nearly 150 years, Mothers’ Union has faithfully worked to uphold the value and dignity of every person, especially within family and community life. To now have, for the first time, a female Archbishop as our Patron is a moment of deep encouragement and inspiration for our global movement, the majority of whom are women serving in countless acts of faith and courageous leadership across more than 80 countries.

Her appointment marks a new chapter, not just for the Church of England and the Anglican Communion, but for all of us who long to see a world where gender is never a barrier to calling, leadership, or service.

We offer our prayers, along with those of our 4 million members worldwide, for the Archbishop, her husband, and family as she steps into this sacred and weighty role. May God grant her wisdom, strength, and compassion as she leads the Church and journeys with us in our shared mission of transformation.

Together, with Christ at the centre, we continue to serve, faithfully and hopefully, as a worldwide movement united in love.
