Botswana

Botswana is a landlocked and sparsely populated country, bordered by South Africa to the south and south-east, Namibia to the west and north, and Zimbabwe to the north-east. Formerly one of the poorest countries in the world
Botswana has since become one of the world's fastest-growing economies. In comparison with its neighbours the country now has a relatively high standard of living and boasts the highest Human Development Index rating in Sub-Saharan Africa. However, life in Botswana is not without its challenges and the country has been among the hardest hit by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Botswana has the third-highest prevalence rate for HIV/AIDs and many children have been left orphaned by the disease. 

Mothers’ Union was first established in Botswana in 1972 and now has more than 1,400 members. The vision of Mothers’ Union in Botswana is to be “A dynamic, vibrant, well-structured Mothers’ Union that is responsive to the needs of its members and the community” and this is something which the members are actively working towards in their outreach projects and programmes including:

• Day Care Centre 
• Orphan care programmes
• Street children project
• Prison ministry
• Campaigning against gender-based violence and human trafficking
• Visiting the sick

In 2018 Mothers’ Union in Botswana hope to introduce the Church and Community Mobilisation process.
