Mothers’ Union brings together global conversations to set bold new strategy as it holds first Worldwide Council outside of the UK

The Council meeting is more than just a formal gathering, over 70 Mothers’ Union leaders will bring together over two years of global conversations from around the world. 
 
Mothers’ Union Worldwide President Sheran Harper reflected on why this is such a significant week in Mothers’ Union’s history: “We will leave Rwanda with a clear and shared understanding of who we are as a movement, the changes we can bring and  bold new  direction for our global movement ensuring that all lives we touch can live life in all its fullness.”
 
The council meeting was attended by the Archbishop of Rwanda, The Most Revd. Dr Laurent Mbanda, who led the opening service reminding the members of the meeting that “when you don’t empower women, nothing happens”. He went on to affirm that the Mothers’ Union holistic approach in addressing needs of the family as a whole ensures long term sustainable change.  He encouraged all leaders present to spur each other on in the work they are overseeing in communities, in churches and with families. 
 
The council meeting was also joined by the Jacqueline Mugabo, Executive Secretary of National Women’s Council, Rwanda who reaffirmed the important role women play in combating poverty and inequality around the world. “We need to strengthen our voices to condemn gender based violence around the world, as a member myself I know Mothers’ Union is best placed to do this”
 
As the week progresses the feedback of more than 200,000 members will be united as one voice to ensure Mothers’ Union continues to be a truly global movement that meets the needs of the communities they serve in over 84 countries around the world.
