Mother's Union Tackling FGM in Sierra Leone

Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognised internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It is an extreme form of discrimination and reflects a deep- rooted inequality between sexes.

The practice violates women and girls’ rights to health, security and physical integrity and around the world Mothers’ Union members are educating and campaigning for an end to this practice.

Mothers’ Union Announces the Sad and Sudden Death of Mrs Joan James, Provincial Vice President of the West Indies

Mothers’ Union Worldwide President, Sheran Harper, was a close friend. She said, “Joan was loved by all and will be remembered as an outstanding leader, an encourager and motivator who could mobilise communities to take action in any area of Mothers’ Union work. She worked quietly and humbly, but was very effective in her work, always ready to give others the praise and glory. We will miss her dearly. May her soul rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus. Farewell dear sister and friend. Until we meet again!”

Mothers' Union Provincial Conference, Kenya

I recently visited Kenya to attend the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Mothers’ Union Provincial Conference, which was opened and supported by the Most Revd Dr Jackson Ole Sapit. Arriving at the opening service of the conference, the auditorium was awash with blue and white. Every available seat was taken with people spilling out into the corridors and through to an outdoor space, in order to accommodate all 2000 participants from the Mothers’ Union.

Meet Danny, a participant of Mothers' Union Parenting Programme

"Before I did the Positive Parenting Programme I didn’t know there were different ways to do parenting, our cultural ways are just….different. We are used to ignoring each other’s feelings and we didn’t really get taught empathy. The programme changed the way I communicate, I used to always want to dominate, I gave direction without asking others opinions, I made all the big decisions for the family that weren’t always right - now I talk with my family and we make joint decisions.
