School Holiday Lunch Clubs for all the family

For the families of children who receive free school lunches, the school holidays can be a difficult time when it comes to providing all the necessary meals. Mothers’ Union members are working to bridge the gap for these families by supplying nutritious lunchtime meals for the children and their parents.

Members do this by partnering with schools to identify those who are eligible for free school lunches and to advertise the service to these families. They can then sign up at school to attend the lunch clubs that are run from local church or community centre halls.

Mothers' Union Provincial Conference, Kenya

I recently visited Kenya to attend the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Mothers’ Union Provincial Conference, which was opened and supported by the Most Revd Dr Jackson Ole Sapit. Arriving at the opening service of the conference, the auditorium was awash with blue and white. Every available seat was taken with people spilling out into the corridors and through to an outdoor space, in order to accommodate all 2000 participants from the Mothers’ Union.

Support for orphans in Papua New Guinea

Despite being at risk of dangerous flooding and mud-slides, the Six Mile district on the eastern edge of capital city, Port Moresby, PNG, has seen a rapid rise in population in recent decades, with many people living in poverty. The deprivation of the area has led to increased social tension, and Six Mile is well known for its violence and gang culture. Gangs here have been known to burn down entire villages in “turf war” battles.

Meet Danny, a participant of Mothers' Union Parenting Programme

"Before I did the Positive Parenting Programme I didn’t know there were different ways to do parenting, our cultural ways are just….different. We are used to ignoring each other’s feelings and we didn’t really get taught empathy. The programme changed the way I communicate, I used to always want to dominate, I gave direction without asking others opinions, I made all the big decisions for the family that weren’t always right - now I talk with my family and we make joint decisions.

Mothers’ Union Literacy and Financial Education Programme making an enormous difference in Sudan

Previously, despite us being able to continue to meet with the Mothers’ Union team in South Sudan due to the issues faced by Christians visiting Sudan, we have had difficulties actually being able to physically travel there. Mama Reida, the MU Community Development Coordinators (CDC’s) in Khartoum greeted us on our first morning, “We thought you’d never come again” was a phrase mentioned regularly.

Soldier Neil's AFIA journey

Described as one of the most successful snipers in the British Army, Neil had experienced some horrendous things. Going into hostile territories he had seen mass graves, been shot at more times than he could remember, been blown up and set on fire. He says that "by 2005 I was a broken man, suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder". He felt this prolonged exposure to violent events had led him to become, what he describes as, "murderous, lying, thieving, cheating scum on the verge of alcohol dependency".
