There are approximately 800 Mothers’ Union members in this area, many of whom meet at regular intervals. Others, who do not want or are not able to attend meetings for one reason or another, are kept in touch by letter or email and are invited to Mothers’ Union events throughout the year. These are our valued diocesan members, some of whom meet in local groups where there is no branch.

All members recieve the three editions of our Diocesan magazine NEWSLINE each year.

Our work:

  • Local hospitals – emergency wash bags & ‘cheer-up’/activity bags for children and adults, knitting & sewing - blankets and clothes for premature babies, incubator covers and baby quilt covers.
  • Dementia wards/residential homes – memory books and twiddle-cuffs
  • Knitting for overseas
  • Prisons – Christmas cards for inmates.
  • Yarls Wood Immigration Removal Centre (For women)– craft items, suitcases, clothing and Bibles (At present being used for male boat immigrants).
  • Contact Centre – for children to keep in touch with both parents
  • Away From It All (AFIA) holidays – for families facing adversity
  • Refuge centers for women and their children providing;
    • Activity Days/Away Days;
    • Activity Packs when the children first arrive;
    • Easter Eggs for the children;
    • Advent calendars & Christmas gifts for the children;
    • Start-up packs of bedding, kitchen utensils, pots & pans for when they move on to their own homes;

As well as the above, looking to the future in the Diocese of St Albans, we intend to get more involved locally by: promoting foodbanks, providing meals on a Sunday, helping the homeless, providing support for parents nationally and internationally by continuing to campaign to governments on social policies e.g. violence in families.

Mothers’ Union is active throughout the diocese. If you would like to become involved, please contact the office.
