Taking place at York Minster the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, commissioned Mrs June Houghton as the new Provincial President and prayed for her as she undertakes her role for next three years. At the same service the Right Reverend John Packer was commissioned by the Archbishop as York's first provincial chaplain.

Mrs Houghton said “The request to be nominated as Provincial President for York came as a complete surprise to me and once again I felt God asking me to serve him, Mothers' Union members and our communities. My past experience holding many different roles within Mothers' Union means I feel I well-equipped and empowered to take the Province forward during the next three years which I know will be a time of change. I am privileged to be able to say to members at all levels "I have walked in your shoes and promise that I will walk with you now" supporting, sharing and praying for them, in all we try to achieve, serving our God through the membership of the Mothers’ Union.

The Archbishop, who is Patron of the Mothers Union, said on Twitter on the morning of the service "I'm delighted to be at York Minster for the Mothers' Union Provincial Service. I’ll be preaching & commissioning the new Provincial President June Houghton as she takes on this new role"
