Mary Magdalene Film

Mothers' Union Companion Booklet to coincide with film DVD release

23 Jul 2018

After the success of Victoria and Abdul we are delighted to be partnering once again with Damaris Media to offer you this free resource for the film Mary Magdalene, available for digital download on 9th July and to own on DVD or Blu-ray 23rd July. Members, churches and the wider public can download our Companion Booklet which explores the issues addressed within the film from a biblical perspective.

Mary Magdalene is a powerfully imagined portrait of the enigmatic biblical figure. The film tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by tradition, Mary defies her family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.

Please note that this film is a creative interpretation of the story of Mary Magdalene and will have some difference to biblical and theological texts. Despite this, we think the film is of real value to watch and then discuss. Professor Helen Bond, Professor of Christian Origins says;

This is a deeply moving and thought-provoking film. Drawing on a profound understanding of ancient gender divisions, Mary Magdalene presents a revolutionary yet compelling portrait of the role and significance of Jesus' closest female disciple. Intensely spiritual, compassionate, encouraging and level-headed, this is a Mary who will inspire Christian women everywhere.

We believe the themes running through “Mary Magdalene” particularly with regards to gender equality make this film a great way to promote interesting dialogue with your group. We hope that you will enjoy watching this wonderful movie, and that this free Companion Booklet will help guide an interesting group/branch session.
