Worldwide President Message on the Death of Pope Francis
On behalf of our global organisation Mothers’ Union, Board of Trustees and staff of Mary Sumner House central headquarters, we join our sisters and brothers around the world in mourning the death of Pope Francis. His gentle ‘servanthood’ leadership will be greatly missed.
He lived a life of compassion which was reflected in his championing of the poor, the marginalised and those in need. His humility was evident even in death as his wishes were for a simple place of rest, his tomb marked only with his name.
His respect for God’s creation and his advocating to all leaders the importance of preserving our earth and its beauty furthered the awareness of how we are managing our resources and caring for God’s gracious gift to us.
His final words in his final days to his people in offering his suffering to the Lord, ‘for peace in the world and fraternity among peoples’ encourages us to work together to advocate for peace and to end violence, end poverty and end injustice, our three pillars of Mothers’ Union movement.
May we be reminded in the coming days of Pope Francis’ goodness, his strength, his humility but above all his deep and abiding faith. It is a testament of his witness to all of us around the world, whatever faith we hold fast to, to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.
But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously— take God seriously.
