Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, south of India. In Sri Lanka unemployment and poverty are significant challenges and in response a high percentage of women have gone abroad for work.

This threatens the stability of families in communities throughout Sri Lanka. Violence against women and child abuse are also challenges and Mothers’ Union in Sri Lanka is running awareness programmes on both of these topics.

Sri Lanka is still recovering from the effects of a 30 year civil war – many people went missing, many lost everything and many children lost their parents.

Christians are a minority in Sri Lanka making up only around 7% of the population. Mothers’ Union has been active here for over a century, reaching out to others in their community and bringing about social change. With a membership of more than 3,000, their current activities include:

  • Prison ministry
  • Campaigning
  • Vocational training
  • Literacy
  • Mothers’ Union shop
  • Christmas gifts for pre-school children
  • Feeding programmes
  • Educational support
  • Home for the elderly
  • Hospital visitation
  • Medical clinics

In 2018 Mothers’ Union in Sri Lanka celebrated 110 years.
