South Africa

South Africa is a beautiful country covering the southern-most tip of the African continent. South Africa’s stability and economic growth compared to neighbouring countries has made it a place of refuge for asylum seekers and refugees.

However, despite its growing economy, there are many challenges facing families in South Africa today including poverty, HIV/AIDS, unemployment, crime and domestic violence. In 2008 the average life expectancy in South Africa fell to just 43 years, largely due to HIV/AIDS, but in recent years it has increased and now stands at 63 years.

More than 60,000 Mothers’ Union members in South Africa work at the heart of their community, helping to improve conditions for families across the country.

Projects vary in each depending on local challenges and needs, but there are a number of key projects that Mothers’ Union across the country are engage in, including:

  • Orphan care programmes
  • Home based care for people living with HIV/AIDs
  • Baptism support
  • Hospital visitation
  • Feeding programmes
  • Church and Community Mobilisation
  • Campaigning against gender based violence
  • Prison ministry
  • Environmental protection
  • Agricultural projects
