Mothers’ Union in the Diocese of Portsmouth seeks to support our local families by developing prayer and spiritual growth, studying and reflecting on family life and marriage and their place in society and resourcing our members to take practical action to improve conditions for families.

We have 444 members at the moment with 20 branches in four deaneries. As well as being involved in the national and international projects our Members are involved in many local projects examples of which are: supplying holidays, or a day away for disadvantaged families; running a Grandparent & Toddler group where older people meet others of similar age to chat and exchange ideas and problems in looking after their grandchildren.  This group helps prevent isolation, provides new friends and toddlers learn to mix whilst in a warm and friendly environment; providing toiletries for new elderly care hospital inpatients; befriending refugees; supporting parents/carers with 'bags of love' as their children begin school; providing basic kitchen equipment for those leaving refuges.  All members of Mothers' Union share equal status, but there are different ways of belonging – there are a few different types of membership such as branch and diocesan.

Our work:

  • We run pudding events where we invite non-members to an evening where our members bring desserts, this is part of our action and outreach
  • We are involved in knitting twiddle muffs for people suffering with dementia
  • We support many Away From It All (AFIA) holidays for those in need
We run annual AFIA events in the Summer where we take single parents and their children for a day out
You can get involved by praying for the work of the Mothers Union, by becoming a member of Mothers' Union and helping with projects, and fundraising, or purchasing items from the local MU Enterprise rep in this diocese. • We ran an AFIA event at Christmas where we took children to see Santa at Havenstreet Steam Railway.
